Are you dysnavic?
Sometimes, in spite of the richness of our language, we need a new word. Read on to find out what ‘dysnavic’ means.
My daughter and I decided over a rather giggly cup of tea that we were dysnavic. You know what navigation is? Well that’s what we can’t do. Dyslexics have a well-recognised label to explain what they find difficult so why can’t we?
Have you ever come out of a shop and turned the wrong way so you are going back where you came from? Do you panic when you hear words like ‘so I’ll see you at reception then’ because you know you won’t be able to find your way back there on your own? Do you sometimes wait for people rather randomly because you don’t want to admit that you have no idea which way to go next?
If so, you are dysnavic. Join the club. It is so much better to announce proudly that you are dysnavic than to apologise weakly that you have no sense of direction. There is nothing wrong with our intelligence – we just don’t have that little inbuilt compass that other people take for granted.
Please, if you are one of us – go ahead and use the word. Then, when people don’t know what it means, give them a withering look along with your explanation so that they feel thoroughly ashamed of their poor vocabulary.
Talk about being dysnavic and then report here on your experiences. Have fun!
